We sat down with founding principal Edward H. Williams II—former litigator at Skadden and WilmerHale, federal appellate clerk, and former co-director of the Howard University School of Law Civil Rights Clinic—to discuss the philosophy behind the new practice and why institutions need a new kind of legal strategist.
Q: Your firm’s tagline is “Where the law meets the moment.” What does that mean in practice?
Edward H. Williams II: It means we handle the cases where a legal decision is rarely just about the law. When an institution faces a civil rights crisis, a major internal investigation, or a high-stakes reputational threat, the fallout happens in the courtroom, the boardroom, and the public square all at once.

Q: You have a unique background—moving between elite corporate “Big Law” defense and civil rights clinic leadership at Howard University. How does that shape the firm?
Williams: Many people look at corporate defense and civil rights advocacy as entirely separate worlds. I see them as deeply complementary.
My time handling complex litigation and crises at firms like Skadden, WilmerHale, and Orrick taught me absolute operational rigor and how large institutions think. My work at Howard’s Civil Rights Clinic grounded me in appellate precision and what the law truly owes people.
By bringing both perspectives to the table, we offer institutional clients something rare: elite-tier legal discipline paired with the deep judgment required to handle sensitive, human-centric issues.
Q: One of your core practice areas is Strategic Counsel & Investigations, particularly regarding DEI and organizational change. Why is this focus so critical right now?
Williams: The regulatory and political landscape surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion compliance is shifting rapidly. Institutions are facing intense public scrutiny from all sides.
When a crisis or governance dispute hits, the instinct for many is to react to the short-term pressure of the 24-hour news cycle. Our job is to help leadership see around corners.
